I might be able to write something quickly now. So I had to work on New Year eve. I finished work as soon as I could and left home, it was strange that there was hardly anyone about, it was like a ghost city, till the train got to Central station. I got off the train and was in the pedestrian tunnel walking to the bus stop and lots of people were walking in the opposite direction, into the city and Circular Quay with cushions and esky's and silly hats. Everyone was getting a good position for the fireworks already, it was only 5 in the afternoon. I caught an empty bus home and quickly ate a few mouthfuls of food, I know only too well the danger of drinking on an empty stomach. I packed up some cheese and dips and crackers to take to the party I was going to. I also threw in some glow sticks, that was my Xmas present to myself, a pack of 80 glow sticks! You can never have too much glow I think. I jumped on my bike and rode to Sarah's place in Balmain. This is right by the water and such a good view of the harbour and harbour bridge. It was about 7pm by this time and all the streets into Balmain were blocked off by police barricades. No one was allowed in or out by their car, but I was on my push bike, so it wasn't a problem at all. I just rode around the barricades and smiled and waved to the police as I passed. I locked up my bike at Sarah's apartment and walked down to the park. There is a park right on the water side. Some people that Sarah knew had not worked that day and so had spread out some blankets and a sun shade and been there since midday. So we had an excellent location for the fireworks. There was plenty of crackers and so forth as well. It was coming up to 9 o'clock, we all had our glow sticks on and my friends, Felix and Hyuna were stuck on a bus, still coming and at 5 mins to 9 my friend Paul managed to get there, he caught a taxi, and they were allowing taxis to come through the barricades. I took a lot of photos of the 9 o'clock fireworks, these are the ones they put on for the children and families. The theory is they'll all go home then and let the serious drinking and swearing start. I don't think anyone left the park where we were after the 9 o'clock fireworks. I had a lovely time meeting everyone in the group and catching up with the people I did know. I only had a few drinks as I didn't take that many cans of vodka mix cause I was so tired already. Felix and Hyuna finally arrived, they said they were caught in a traffic jam in the bus and then had to walk quite a way from the bus stop. The midnight fireworks were wonderful and I just hugged everyone and screamed and shouted, they were great. There were square fireworks, love heart ones and of course the bridge fireworks were great. That is what Sydney does the best in the world, I think, firework displays. There was quite a lot of English people in the group I was in and they all said they had never seen such good fireworks. We packed up the blankets and so forth and went back to Sarah's flat. We talked and danced and drank until 3am, then there was another party down the road to go to. Everyone moved off, they were all ready to go and it was only a short walk away apparently. That was when Paul threw up everywhere. He hadn't had anything to drink that day. He was staying at my place in Glebe and said that really he should go home. So by this time, there was only Felix and Hyuna, Paul and Swar and myself left. Swar ran off to catch up with his friends, and Felix and Hyuna walked to the bus stop and magically there was a bus going to their place in Petersham, so they got on that. Paul and I walked all the way to Glebe, it took about an hour and he was feeling much better by the time we got home. Then I cooked up some breakfast for us, by which time dawn was breaking in the sky. We sat on the balcony eating our new year breakfast watching sun rise and then went to bed. When I woke up at 2 in the afternoon it had turned into a hot sunny day, but apparently I found out later that all the beaches in Sydney weer closed as there is a cyclone up north in Queensland and it is making all the beaches down the coast very rough and unsafe for swimming. Paul showered and went home and I stayed in my flat, cleaning up the dishes and opening Xmas presents, I always leave some for the New Year, as I think it's a good way to start the new year, with a gift. I waited till it was nightfall, and cooled down a bit, rang a few people to ask about their celebrations and went to bed again about 11pm. So that is pretty much my new year and exactly how I wanted it. No more drinking or party after 3am, that was when I'd planned to head home anyway. I saw dawn, which is also a good tradition of mine for New Year. So that was my new year that I wanted to share with you.
