Summer Gay Day
Posted ages ago
Firstly, congratulations to SameSame for taking the initiative to try and organise something different such as Summer Gay Day... it was a great concept and a nice space.
There is not much anyone could have done about the weather and it was a shame that the first day of summer looked like a wet day in winter. Equally dampening the spirit and vibe of the event was the excessive police presence and rigorous searches. It seems each gay event gets tougher and tougher on that score… how far away are cavity searches I wonder? If that happens, all the searchers have to be Mr Gay Australia finalists and dressed in their Speedos only…
Anyway, all this was erased by a happy, friendly and relaxed crowd… most who, like me, decided to dress as if it was a boiling first day of summer and dance as the sun went down.
I don’t want to harp on negatives but once incident really pissed me off, so I’m going to vent. Some guy was spreading the word on the need for all gay boys to support gay marriage. I was with my partner of more than five years so I guess he thought we’d be keen to snap up one of his flyers and start writing to Kevin that it was the most important thing he needs to do now he’s in power.
Well, I believe in legal equality – for super, adoption, access to IVF… that gay couples have all legal rights of a straight couple… but I do not particularly get upset about whether we can get married or not. I guess I am going to get howled down by all those that want the right to marry… but even in heterosexual relationships I think its becoming an outdated concept and I certainly do not feel the need to conform to hetero norms. Lets concentrate on legal equality, the real issue.
Anyway… the thing that annoyed me was that we told the eager same sex marriage spruiker that we did not want his flyer. Ten minutes later he was hassling us again and when we said no thanks, he got quite angry with us and said “then why do you bother coming to events like this?” Suddenly I don’t have a right to go to Summer Gay Day because I do not wish to make a song and dance about gay marriage?
I always find it ironic that for a community that demands tolerance and diversity of the wider community, it is incredibly intolerant of anyone who holds different views.
I did not even answer this guy because I did not want the day coloured, but I certainly don’t think I needed to justify why I was at a gay events to someone else who obviously has their own agenda.
Luckily, the DJs beckoned and the rest of the crowd – who did not seem to be there stewing over our gay marriage rights – were there to erase that little incident and a good day and night was had.
